  • Published 12 December 2022; updated 16 April 2026; estimated reading time 4 minutes. The Port of Bergen is described as Norway’s second-largest port and a major Western Norway freight, offshore and cruise hub. The article presents its ambition, voiced by Environmental Port Index (EPI) CEO Even Husby, to become Europe’s greenest and smartest port. It says the port has a large shore-power installation, increasingly digital operations and an environmental reporting tool.
  • The page cites an IMO target to reduce international shipping CO₂ emissions 40% from 2008 levels by 2030 and links to WHO information on air pollution. It argues ports need infrastructure, incentives and smarter operations as well as cleaner ships.
  • Bergen worked with DNV and other Norwegian ports to create EPI, launched in 2020. The tool scores ships from 0–100 based on emissions while moored and offers lower port fees to better-performing vessels. Husby says cruise-ship scores rose during the first season, and the article says EPI is used in 46 ports.
  • In 2018 the Port of Bergen and energy company Eviny established Plug to develop and operate shore power. The article says Plug expanded from its initial Bergen installations into Norway and Northern Europe, serving cruise ships, ferries and offshore vessels. Plug CEO Maria Boss says Bergen’s early adoption helped advance shore power. The page identifies a Zinus shore-power system and links to Zinus and PSW Power & Automation solutions.
  • Port electrification also supports battery-hybrid ships. Havila Voyages’ four LNG/battery ships can switch off generators and use shore electricity for onboard hotel loads while in Bergen, through Plug’s supply. The port’s longer-term plan described in the article moves cargo operations to Ågotnes, freeing central-city land and enabling autonomous systems and smart traffic management intended to reduce congestion and emissions.
