  • Published 26 October 2023; updated 30 September 2026; estimated reading time 5 minutes. The article states annual global hydrogen production at about 95 million tonnes, with about 95% described as grey hydrogen from fossil fuels and 5% as green hydrogen from renewable electricity. It says green hydrogen then cost nearly twice as much, while predicting costs could fall as production scales and renewable power costs decline; this is an older article’s forecast, not a verified current market assessment.
  • Nel’s history is traced to Norsk Hydro in Notodden in 1927 and a large water-electrolysis plant built at Rjukan in 1940. The article says Nel acquired Proton OnSite in 2017 and quotes its market-development director Thorsten Herbert on a Norwegian electrolyser factory with potential capacity up to 2 GW; the capacity and output are project claims/plans in the article. Nel aimed to produce at scale and reduce costs.
  • SINTEF is described as a Norwegian applied-research organisation with more than 70 years’ experience. Its REFHYNE project in Wesseling, Germany, began production in July 2021 and was expected to reach 10 MW and up to 1,300 tonnes/year of hydrogen. The article also recounts Norwegian Hydrogen’s then-planned Geirangerfjord project, slated to start in late 2023, which predates the later Hellesylt facility described in other coverage.
  • Horten-based Gen2 Energy, founded in 2019, describes plans to develop an integrated hydrogen value chain: locate production near shipping, compress and containerise hydrogen, deliver it to customers, monitor supply and return empty containers. The page presents the operating model as a development plan, not confirmed operations. It argues that Norway’s hydropower, water resources and hydrogen expertise support production, but these are promotional claims. Related industries: Energy and Hydrogen.
