Norway awards record funding to green maritime projects
- Published 7 October 2024; updated 25 March 2026; estimated reading time 4 minutes. The article reports Enova awards of about USD 114 million to 15 low-emission ships: six ammonia-fuelled and nine hydrogen-fuelled. The named recipients include Amon Maritime and Höegh Autoliners for ammonia dual-fuel car carriers; Halten Bulk, Møre Sjø, Napier and the Norwegian arm of Maris Fiducia for hydrogen vessels; and HAV Hydrogen for a full-scale prototype of its containerised “zero emission pod.” Maris Fiducia planned five 6,000 dwt vessels. These funding and build plans are reported as of 2024, not verified current status.
- The award programme was framed as supporting the government goal to cut domestic-shipping GHG emissions at least 55% by 2030. The Green Shipping Programme is described as a public-private initiative with 54 pilot projects and support for zero-emission cargo vessels. Innovation Norway’s Hans Inge Bollingmo says Norway had more than 70 electric ferries at the time; the page credits collaboration among shipowners, technology firms and public funders, and references the first electric ferry MS Ampere and liquid-hydrogen ferry MF Hydra.
- The article highlights regulatory work by the Norwegian Maritime Authority and international partners, including IMO, to establish safe approval rules for hydrogen-powered vessels. It presents Norwegian zero-emission shipping rules and know-how as potential exports and notes that county/municipal procurement and support helped make demonstration vessels possible.
