Norway’s battery industry electrifies world’s fastest, cleanest, quietest boats
- Published 20 June 2023; updated 30 September 2026; estimated reading time 4 minutes. The article says Norway has led electrification of small and medium vessels, while large commercial ships are more likely to use hybrid propulsion because of size, weight and cost. Former Invest in Norway battery lead Nora Rosenberg Grobæk describes opportunities from leisure boats to workboats and ferries. The article cites survey data that one in five Norwegian boat owners would consider electric boats and mentions boat-sharing services such as Kruser.
- Evoy supplies electric motor systems for new and retrofit 15–50-foot boats, with 90% of its systems then used professionally and leisure applications growing. CEO Leif A. Stavøstrand claims the company’s motors are the world’s fastest, with speeds over 50 knots and 120 to 400+ horsepower. Hukkelberg Boats’ Flying Fish 37 uses lightweight aluminium to mitigate battery weight. The companies argue higher initial costs can be offset through fuel, servicing and maintenance savings.
- Digital features described include security/logistics functions, over-the-air updates, programmable motors, remote stop/start/charging, diagnostics, live monitoring and geo-fencing. The article links Norway’s passenger-ferry examples and a separate electric-ferry overview. Claims about global rankings, speeds and savings are attributed to the article/company sources.
