Norway future-proofs its hybrid offshore wind vessels
- Published 26 April 2024; updated 30 September 2026; estimated reading time 5 minutes. The article describes Norway’s offshore-wind maritime supply chain and specialized service-operation, crew-transfer, construction-support and walk-to-work vessels. It says plug-in battery hybrids reduce fuel use/emissions by up to 25% against equivalent diesel vessels, using batteries for zero-emission sailing, harbour manoeuvres, spinning reserve, peak shaving, blackout prevention and load support. The figure is attributed to the article and not independently checked.
- VARD delivered hybrid CSOVs Norwind Hurricane and Rem Power/Rem Purus within the preceding year, according to the article. Its vessels are designed for later fuel-system upgrades/conversion as technologies mature. The Ocean Charger consortium is developing offshore charging for battery-powered vessels; the page says three hours of wind-farm charging could power one full day of SOV operations without reducing operability. Partners named: VARD Design, Seaonics, Vard Electro, Corvus Energy, DigiCat, Equinor, Maritime CleanTech, NORCE, Plug, Rem Offshore, Shoreline, SINTEF Energy Research, SINTEF Ocean, Solstad Offshore, Source Galileo Norway, Sustainable Energy and University of Bergen.
- Other fuel developments listed: Eidesvik Offshore’s methanol/battery construction-support vessel; Ulstein’s SX232 hybrid methanol-capable vessel with energy recovery; its J102 installation and SX190 construction-support designs combining hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, described as capable of zero-emission operation for 75% of operating time. Umoe Mandal supplies WAVECRAFT crew-transfer vessels; Integrated Wind Solutions has delivered plug-in hybrid walk-to-work vessels.
- Innovation Norway advisor Sigurd Urdal and VARD SVP Amrit Bhullar attribute the cluster’s strength to integrated logistics/digital systems, close suppliers, collaborative business culture and trust.
