NORHyWAY: Norway’s blueprint for a complete hydrogen value chain
- Published 13 March 2026; updated 30 September 2026; estimated reading time 4 minutes. NORHyWAY is described as the Nordic region’s first large-scale Hydrogen Valley, spanning production, infrastructure and demand, with a hub in Central Norway and scope from Slagentangen in the south to Hammerfest in the north. RENERGY received EUR 21 million under Horizon Europe in 2025; the article states total planned investment of about EUR 963.3 million.
- The initiative aims to build 37,081 tonnes/year of hydrogen production capacity by 2035 and estimates annual CO₂ reductions up to 345,000 tonnes. These are project targets/forecasts, not achieved capacity or reductions. The page says the proposal ranked among the top three of 35 European Hydrogen Valley applications and describes eight large-scale valleys as financed in Europe.
- The project is led by RENERGY, SINTEF and HYDROGENi, coordinated by Fremtidens Industri, with 16 partners spanning energy, maritime, transport, logistics, research and technology. RENERGY and Innovation Norway’s Brussels-based EU advisors combined Norwegian projects into a joint application after an initial unsuccessful attempt; SINTEF helped lead the application process. The article describes earlier problems securing demand and investment at scale.
- RENERGY advisor Ida Kallmyr Lerheim says the project moves into a phase of completing and operating production facilities. The article notes a first vessel already built and partner truck orders, and quotes a vision of hydrogen vessels/trucks by 2040; project timelines remain future plans. Hydrogen Valley is defined as a geographic ecosystem producing, distributing and using hydrogen locally to displace fossil fuel, supported by public/private investment. The EU allows blue hydrogen alongside green during transition, according to the article.
