Norway pioneers digital solutions to boost occupational safety in offshore wind
Page date: published 5 December 2024; updated 30 September 2026; 5 min read (as rendered).
The article frames offshore wind safety around distance from shore, difficult marine weather and hazards including lifting and marine operations, enclosed spaces, high voltage, dropped objects and work at height. It describes Norway’s work-safety rules and oversight by the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority (Havtil), and names DNV as an offshore wind safety and classification actor. Equinor, Aker Solutions and Vår Energi are described as collaborators on the open Always Safe learning platform, intended to strengthen safety culture and reduce serious accidents, injuries and incidents.
Examples of digital and remote safety tools include ScanReach’s wireless personnel-on-board platform, which tracks workers across vessels and turbines and is presented as shortening search and rescue from hours to minutes; Uptime International’s AI-assisted, motion-compensated gangway, whose landing system learns from earlier dockings; Kongsberg Ferrotech’s subsea inspection, maintenance and repair robots; and Remota’s shore-based centres coordinating vessel, ROV and offshore operations. Monitoring examples include Automasjon & Data sensors for weather and sea conditions and helicopter deployment, Light Structures’ fibre-optic stress, deflection, vibration and fatigue monitoring, and Ex-tech Group wireless microsensors for hazardous-area assets. These company capabilities and performance claims are reported by the article.
