RESOURCE / PUBLIC SOURCE RECORD
Invest in Norway: Aquaculture and fisheries
- The page highlights Norway’s long coastline, sea area and water exchange as advantages for sea-based food production. It states Norwegian farmed salmon is exported to over 100 countries and supplies 22 million meals daily worldwide. It attributes the sector’s global standing to about 30 years of industrial development, R&D and publicly financed seafood clusters.
- The page frames biological challenges and disease as major constraints, with innovation needs in monitoring/preventing parasites, fish health/welfare and sustainable volume growth. Feed is stated to account for over 80% of farmed salmon emissions per unit and 46% of production costs, making alternative feed ingredients important. It estimates 0.5 kg of biological offshore waste per kg of salmon and discusses waste handling/reuse for circularity. Tighter carbon-footprint and welfare rules, plus potential regulatory changes around sites, could increase interest in offshore/nearshore production and new technologies.
