Arctic Bioscience produces DHA-rich phospholipid extract from herring roe
- Published 2 December 2022 and updated 28 September 2026. Arctic Bioscience’s Romega is an omega-3 phospholipid oil made from roe of North Atlantic spring-spawning herring, a by-product often discarded or downgraded during filleting. A patented process extracts the oil; the page says its phospholipid form may improve omega-3 uptake compared with conventional supplements.
- Romega contains DHA, associated on the page with normal brain function, and EPA, associated with normal cardiovascular function, plus vitamin D. The company says it sources roe from sustainable fisheries and presents the product as higher-value use of an underused fishery stream. The page’s health statements are explicitly qualified and its disclaimer says Romega is a food supplement approved for consumer sale in Norway, with claims aligned to EFSA and Norwegian food-safety authority rules.
- Arctic Bioscience sells Romega directly in Norway and through selected retailers; globally it sells herring-roe oil and protein B2B for partners’ products. The page cites an older 2019 omega-3 market estimate of USD 2.49 billion and nearly 8% annual growth. It also says the company is developing an investigational herring-roe medicine for mild-to-moderate psoriasis; no approval claim is made. Links to UN goals 3, 12 and 14.
