Asak FLYT permeable paving reduces urban flooding

From the public capture. Detailed factual notes from Business Norway. Statements and figures reflect the source at the time of capture.

  • Published 22 January 2024 and updated 28 September 2026. FLYT is a permeable concrete paving collection created by Norwegian manufacturer Asak Miljøstein with Snøhetta, which owns the design rights. Three interlocking hexagonal paver shapes allow flexible layouts and transitions in public outdoor spaces while managing stormwater.
  • Water drains through the joints into a permeable sub-base for storage and later infiltration. Asak says the surface allows up to 28% permeability per square metre. Reduced standing water can lower flood damage, ice formation and pedestrian slip risk, while reducing spending on salt, gravel and drainage pipes. The stones have an expected 60-year lifespan; Asak estimates they reabsorb half the CO₂ emitted in cement production through recarbonation.
  • The page cites the 2021 Belgium/Germany floods at 209 deaths and USD 43 billion damage. It says SuDS requirements are expanding in markets including Norway and the UK, and reports inquiries from landscape architects in Italy, Switzerland and the US. FLYT was shortlisted for Dezeen Awards, named “Best in Europe” in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards, and a finalist for Norway’s 2023 construction-industry innovation award. Asak was seeking international licensing/collaboration partners, with local production preferred. Linked to UN goal 11.
