Beyonder’s battery cell technology is a game-changer
- Published 7 July 2022; updated 30 September 2026; 2-minute read. Beyonder’s lithium-ion capacitor (LiC) hybrid cell combines a supercapacitor-style cathode with a lithium-ion battery anode. The article describes higher power and faster charging than conventional lithium-ion batteries, with higher energy density than capacitors. The cell is described as non-flammable, operable in Nordic low temperatures, and capable of a full charge in two minutes and up to 100,000 recharge cycles.
- Its positive-electrode activated carbon is made from pine and spruce sawdust using a patented process; the negative electrode uses silicon derived from sand. The page says the materials are recyclable and avoid heavy metals, and that production uses fewer chemicals and less energy than standard lithium-ion cell manufacturing. Suggested uses include renewable-energy grids, transport and offshore energy systems needing high power and rapid charging.
- At publication/update the page marked commercial availability as “soon available”; it also contains a historical plan to open a full-scale production facility in the Stavanger region in 2024. The company had established a battery centre in Stavanger for R&D, laboratories, production testing and prototypes. It cites a BloombergNEF forecast of 122-fold growth in worldwide energy-storage demand over 20 years. Linked UN SDGs: 7, 11 and 12.
