  • Published 22 March 2023; updated 21 September 2026; 2-minute read. Biowater Technology’s patented CFIC (continuous flow intermittent cleaning) is a high-rate aerobic biofilm wastewater-treatment process based on moving-bed biofilm reactors, with a stated 90% bio-carrier fill. It is designed for municipal and industrial wastewater, including polishing of anaerobic effluent with low-to-medium organic strength and high ammonia.
  • The article says a full-scale CFIC plant uses 50% less space and 30% less energy than a traditional MBBR plant, with 0.68 kWh per cubic metre treated. It gives 25% lower total investment than conventional facilities, over 90% chemical oxygen demand removal and 96% NH₄-N removal. The technology can be customised or retrofitted to existing facilities.
  • Project examples include a 2013 petrochemical wastewater plant at Norsk Spesialolje in southern Norway, a three-stage nitrogen/organic-removal plant in China in 2016, and work at GE Healthcare’s Lindesnes facility. The article cites a historical forecast of USD 6.5 billion for the global water/wastewater treatment market in 2025; this forecast date has passed. Linked UN SDGs: 6, 9, 11 and 12.
