  • Published 22 March 2023; updated 21 September 2026; 2-minute read. Biowater’s patented HyVAB (hybrid vertical anaerobic biofilm) integrates high-rate anaerobic and aerobic biofilm treatment vertically in a compact plant for municipal and industrial wastewater. It is intended for high-organic wastewater where anaerobic treatment benefits need aerobic polishing to meet discharge requirements.
  • The page describes a full-scale plant occupying 546 m² at a design throughput of 552 m³/day and using 0.5 kWh/m³. It claims over 90% chemical oxygen demand removal, up to 80% less sludge, odourless effluent, and biogas with 84% methane by volume that can be used for heat or power. The system can be adapted to or retrofitted into existing facilities.
  • The first full-scale HyVAB installation was set up in 2016 for Smaken av Grimstad and serves as an R&D base; pilot studies are said to cover petrochemical and pharmaceutical wastewater. The article’s global-market projection to USD 6 billion by 2023 is historical and past-dated. Linked UN SDGs: 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12.
