  • Published 6 August 2025; updated 5 October 2026; 2-minute read. Brødrene Aa’s Aero™40 H2 is a proposed hydrogen-electric catamaran ferry for routes too long for current battery-only vessels. The page gives capacity of about 300 passengers, up to 600 kg hydrogen storage, 2,600 kW combined engine output and a range of 100 nautical miles at 32 knots without refuelling. Its carbon-fibre Aero hull is said to reduce energy use by 10% versus conventional ferries.
  • Propulsion uses two parallel systems, each with separate fuel cells, batteries and controls, to provide redundancy. The ferry was developed with SEAM (formerly Westcon Power & Automation), Boreal Norge and Ocean Hyway Cluster; SEAM designed and built the hybrid power system. Brødrene Aa estimates about 24 months to build after order. The article positions hydrogen as an option for longer routes where battery weight/volume limits range, and references the IMO’s target to reduce international-shipping greenhouse gases 50% by 2050. The company was founded in 1947 and previously delivered the all-electric sightseeing vessel Future of The Fjords. Linked UN SDGs: 9 and 11.
