Zooca produces aquaculture feed from Calanus finmarchicus
- Published 15 December 2022; updated 28 September 2026; 3-minute read. Zooca – The Calanus Company makes feed ingredients from the North Atlantic copepod Calanus finmarchicus. Products listed are Zooca Hydrolysate, Powder, AstaLipids and SeaFrozen. The company says the copepods are frozen onboard after harvest and processed at its dedicated facility in Sortland; SeaFrozen contains whole, unprocessed copepods, while the other products are formulated-feed ingredients. They target shrimp and saltwater fish; selected ingredients are also used as palatability enhancers in pet food.
- The article reports an estimated annual Calanus biomass production of 290 million tonnes and says precautionary harvesting quotas are used. It says feeding trials with 4% Hydrolysate inclusion showed higher feed intake and feed conversion, survival and intestinal health; the profile also attributes improved growth, health, pigmentation and reduced biomass loss to the ingredients. These are claims reported by the company profile. SeaFrozen is marketed directly to shrimp farms; the other ingredients target feed producers. Linked UN SDGs: 2, 9, 12 and 14.
