  • Published 14 December 2022; updated 21 September 2026; 3-minute read. CambiTHP thermal hydrolysis treats sewage sludge and wet organic waste at high temperature and pressure, before or after anaerobic digestion, to sterilise it and improve biodegradability. Cambi says it designs and manufactures key plant components in-house and builds for reliable operation and long asset life.
  • The article says adding thermal hydrolysis can produce up to 50% more biogas than conventional anaerobic digestion; some biogas supplies process steam, with potential surplus for other energy needs. It says the process increases digester throughput, can reduce required capital investment in digesters, and produces low-odour, pathogen-free biosolids usable as organic fertiliser. Cambi reports over 60 commissioned projects worldwide and says about 40% of UK sludge is processed through its installed plants. It names Australia, China and the US as focus markets. Linked UN SDGs: 3, 7, 11 and 15.
