  • Published 6 July 2022; updated 30 September 2026; 3-minute read. ECO STOR describes a modular commercial energy-storage system using used EV batteries, aimed at lower-cost storage for commercial buildings and distributed generation such as rooftop solar. The article says EV batteries are replaced when capacity falls below 70%, while they may retain 10–15 years of useful life for less demanding stationary applications.

  • The system reuses the complete battery system, avoiding disassembly/reassembly and new wiring/electronics. ECO STOR’s proprietary diagnostic method assesses battery health; a control unit communicates between the battery, energy-management system and grid-connected inverters. In installations with multiple batteries, the control unit monitors and adjusts each battery based on diagnostic information. Modules contain one or two pairs of EV batteries and provide 15–30 kWh; modules can be combined to match a building’s needs.

  • The company says reusing batteries reduces storage costs and battery lifecycle carbon emissions, can reduce demand for new battery production, and can help use renewable energy and recycle batteries at end of life. The article states that Norway expected over 100,000 EV battery replacements in coming years, and quotes a global battery-storage market forecast of USD 8.54 billion by 2023; these are historical estimates/projections from the article.

  • Projects cited: 150 kWh systems for Skipet, a wooden office building in Bergen, and Holmlia School in Oslo, both with solar panels; storage was used for energy storage and peak shaving. ECO STOR had formed German subsidiary ECO STOR GmbH for grid-connected systems using new batteries; it also delivered grid-connected systems and a home rooftop-solar storage solution. The page says ECO STOR signed an MoU with Nissan, Norsk Gjenvinning and Agder Energi concerning EV battery reuse and recycling.
