From the public capture. Detailed factual notes from Business Norway. Statements and figures reflect the source at the time of capture.

  • Published 6 July 2022; updated 30 September 2026; 2-minute read. Elkem was developing a graphite-silicon composite for lithium-ion battery anodes. Graphite provides stable storage but is near its theoretical capacity; silicon has about 10 times graphite’s theoretical storage capacity, but expands and contracts substantially during cycling, risking material breakdown and short battery life. The composite is intended to raise silicon content gradually while addressing performance challenges.

  • If successful, the material could increase energy stored in the same battery volume or reduce battery size for the same capacity. Development was underway with potential customers, developers and research institutes. Elkem said results to date showed more than 1,000 charge cycles for a battery using a silicon/graphite anode. The project had produced one patent and two patent applications at publication time.

  • Elkem commercially supplied speciality silicon Silgrain®e-Si from its Bremanger plant, which it said had a lower environmental footprint than comparable silicon. Its battery focus areas include graphite and silicon for anodes and silicone solutions for battery packs/modules. Article market estimates—22–30% of new light-vehicle sales electric by 2030 and lithium-ion demand rising from 120 GWh in 2017 to over 800 GWh in 2025—are historical forecasts.
