  • Published 22 November 2022; updated 23 March 2026; 2-minute read. Environmental Vision Norway (EVN) describes an offshore aquaculture vessel with fish pens fitted with autonomous current deflectors. The deflectors shelter smaller fish from strong currents while allowing larger fish to swim deeper as they grow. The vessel is designed for unsheltered Norwegian waters, high waves and extreme weather, and can be adapted to local conditions and moved between sites.

  • Moving farms offshore is presented as reducing exposure to coastal algae blooms and contaminants. Stronger currents and deeper water dilute discharged nutrients and faeces; the page says nutrients such as phosphorus can be assimilated back into the ecosystem. The vessel concept is intended to address coastal-farming challenges including antibiotics, harmful algal blooms, seabed waste/feed accumulation, escapes, sea lice and disease transmission.

  • The article estimates annual production of 8,000–10,000 metric tonnes per vessel. It cites 2022 global aquaculture production of 130.9 million tonnes, including 94.4 million tonnes of aquatic animals, and a Norwegian estimate of a five-fold sector expansion by 2050; these are dated figures/projections. Main markets listed are the Americas, Norway and Scotland.
