  • Published 18 November 2022; updated 30 September 2026; 3-minute read. Fjellstrand installs battery systems and converts diesel service operation vessels (SOVs), including former oil-and-gas vessels, for offshore wind work. The shipyard can move vessels ashore into a production hall for conversion and can also add walk-to-work gangways and other equipment. It cites conversion of Norside Supporter with an 896 kWh battery pack. Fjellstrand also upgrades car ferries, fast ferries, survey and seismic-research vessels.

  • The company says battery hybridisation lets vessels operate with three engines instead of four and, with other changes, reduces emissions and power use by 20–25%. The article also claims lower operational/maintenance costs, less lubrication-oil use and a longer service life for older vessels. It describes the model as repurposing vessels that might otherwise remain idle.

  • Fjellstrand refers to experience with battery installation on Ampere (2015) and electric fast ferry Medstraum. Founded in 1928, the company also offers new builds, conversions, battery installation, maintenance and shipyard services. Availability: available.
