- Glint Solar uses satellite data and machine learning to help developers assess floating-solar sites. The page says land scarcity, especially near population centers with high electricity demand, and the expense of long-distance transmission motivate floating arrays on reservoirs and near coasts. Site selection and mooring/anchoring design require site-specific information.
- Site Evaluator Engine (SEE) evaluates a particular water body using up to 40 years of satellite history. Data layers include solar irradiation, wind, waves, water presence, air quality, temperature and shading, plus grid distance, logistics, transport access, deployment points and nearby nature reserves. SEE Region scans larger inland regions or coasts to identify suitable lakes, reservoirs or near-shore locations.
- The tools match site data to a database of floating-photovoltaic suppliers and produce reports ranking potential installations, with estimated levelized cost of energy, capital requirements and payback period.
- The article says floating arrays avoid land costs and can leave land available for agriculture, inhibit algae, reduce evaporation and wave action, and limit coastal erosion. Water cooling can raise panel yield by up to 18% under some conditions compared with ground-mounted solar. The tools are described as globally usable.
- Market section cites an IHS Markit estimate that floating solar installations would grow 143% in 2020, says Asia-Pacific had led growth, and anticipated more than 100 MW installed in the Netherlands and Ukraine within a few years. These are dated article forecasts. SDGs shown: 7 and 15.
