GreenCap closed-loop greenhouse climate-control system
- Published November 28, 2022; updated September 21, 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Status: available. Industry: Agritech and food production.
- GreenCap Solutions’ Environmental Control System (ECS) is a patented closed-loop climate-control system customized for greenhouse type, local climate, crop and required CO₂ capture. Onboard controls manage humidity, temperature and CO₂, allowing the greenhouse to operate as a largely self-sustaining unit.
- The system captures CO₂ from ambient air and recirculates it to support plant growth, with the article claiming virtually no CO₂ emissions. It says growth rate can rise by 50% or more; later in the benefits section, it claims production volume can rise by 40% or more. The page also says up to 70% of production water can be reused, potentially allowing greenhouses in water-scarce areas.
- The article says more greenhouse production can stabilize growing conditions and reduce crop-disease risk, but conventional ventilation releases CO₂. The closed system is described as climate-neutral or potentially climate-positive, with a projected producer payback period of three to five years through higher growth, lower energy consumption, water reuse and avoided CO₂ procurement/production costs.
- Technology was tested at full scale for two years (2019–2020) at NIBIO Særheim in Klepp, Norway. At publication/update, the article said first commercial systems were being installed and GreenCap was receiving international inquiries. SDGs shown: 2 and 12.
