HMH offshore wind component-exchange maintenance concept
- Published November 25, 2024; updated September 30, 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Availability: under development. Markets: Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Categories: Offshore wind / Operations and maintenance; Energy.
- HMH’s Offshore Component eXchange (OCX) concept is designed for major-component replacement on offshore wind turbines. It combines HMH heave-compensation technology and Liftra’s Self-Hoisting Crane LT1200 to perform work from service-operation vessels, eliminating jack-up vessels for fixed-bottom turbines and towing floating turbines to shore.
- Current concept targets already-installed bottom-fixed turbines. The page states operating limits of wind up to 18 m/s, waves up to 1.5 m and components up to 50 metric tons; it supports multi-brand operations up to 6 MW. HMH and Liftra were seeking partners, including a vessel owner and wind-farm operator, to test and advance the system.
- The companies say simpler in-situ maintenance could reduce operating cost and levelized cost of energy, reduce mobilization time, and use smaller, more available/manoeuvrable vessels. Less sailing, fuel use, towing and heavy vessels are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions. The concept was to scale to larger turbines and floating wind after successful deployment.
- The market section cites offshore-wind installations expected to triple from 10.8 GW in 2023 to 66 GW by 2033 (the page wording also says “triple in 2028”). HMH says it is expanding from drilling equipment into offshore wind, subsea mining, civil construction and digital solutions. SDG 7 shown.
