  • Published June 6, 2023; updated September 30, 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Availability: under development. Categories: Hydrogen / Conversion and technology; Offshore wind / Balance of plant; Energy.
  • HydePoint is developing an unmanned, modular offshore substation that combines power-grid connection with hydrogen production. Located near wind farms, it would convert all or part of offshore wind energy into hydrogen, reducing the need to expand onshore power grids. The concept is designed for floating and bottom-fixed farms and can scale by size and number.
  • The article says existing onshore grids may not handle large volumes and peaks from renewable generation. Hydrogen conversion could make wind sites viable where grid infrastructure is weak or absent, increase usable energy from wind farms, and store intermittent renewable output.
  • HydePoint says lower-cost green hydrogen could help heavy industry replace grey hydrogen made from natural gas. Additional renewable hydrogen could support ammonia and synthetic LNG. The page also identifies emissions and hydrogen affordability as key challenges.
  • Backers named: Arendals Fossekompani, Kongsberg Group and Moreld, described as providing technical expertise and a combined 50 years of offshore-sector experience. At article time, a pre-commercial pilot was expected in 2024 and standardized products possibly by 2028; these are dated forecasts. Target markets named are France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK. Market context cites global offshore-wind capacity growth from 40 GW in 2020 to an expected 630 GW by 2050, with 1,000 GW possible in a 1.5°C pathway scenario. SDGs shown: 7 and 9.
