  • Published December 13, 2022; updated September 21, 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Status: available. Category: Agritech and food production.
  • Intravision’s GravityFlow is an automated controlled-environment vertical farm. Plants grow in moving boxes that pass through stages from germination to harvest. The system uses multispectral LED lighting, automation, and closed-loop air and nutrient management. It is intended for leafy greens such as romaine, arugula, basil and kale, as well as medicinal plants and potential plant-made pharmaceuticals.
  • The article describes agriculture as using about 70% of global freshwater and contributing to pesticide pollution, greenhouse-gas emissions and fertilizer runoff. It cites a historical projection that food production would need to double by 2050 relative to 2009 to feed nearly 10 billion people.
  • Intravision claims GravityFlow uses up to 95% less water than conventional growing, eliminates pesticide use and fertilizer runoff, and can cut operational labor costs by up to 90%. Its dense automated lift racks and air management reportedly require 40% of the floor area of competing controlled-environment systems, reducing building and land investment. Indoor growing can place produce nearer consumers and reduce long-distance transport.
  • The article cites a forecast of a USD 520 million European vertical-farming crop market by 2027, and identifies possible future applications in high-protein foods, plant medicines, food flavorings, cosmetics and fragrances. It says the system was developed by Intravision Group after a decade-long research partnership with Canada’s space research institute and the University of Guelph facility; Intravision also participates in ESA’s Melissa program. It has a Canadian subsidiary and production facility and was working with Canadian Farms on planned facilities in New Jersey and Hamilton, New Zealand. SDGs 2 and 12 shown.
