Johnsen Chemicals Sootaway combustion catalyst

- Sootaway is described as a non-hazardous combustion catalyst for coal, biomass and waste. During application, fuel is weighed on a conveyor and catalyst is sprayed at a ratio of 1 gram per kilogram of fuel. The company says it promotes more complete and stable combustion, using up to 90% of the fuel’s calorific value and reducing unburned slag by up to 23%.
- Johnsen Chemicals says the catalyst can reduce carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter, with total air pollution reductions of up to 50%. It can be retrofitted without additional space and may be operational within four weeks. Better fuel efficiency reduces fuel consumption, while less slag buildup improves heat transfer and can extend intervals between shutdowns for slag removal, particularly at biomass and waste-to-energy plants.
- The article says older solid-fuel plants may otherwise need costly, space-consuming flue-gas desulfurization and deNOx retrofits that can take years. It cites coal’s large share of electricity and energy-related CO₂ emissions, and discusses possible demand in China, India, Eastern Europe and waste-to-energy facilities. The article says Sootaway was scheduled for delivery to power and waste-to-energy plants in India, Poland and the US. SDGs 3 and 7 shown.
