- Published December 19, 2022; updated April 15, 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Status: available. Category: Architecture and construction.
- Jotun’s Green Building Solutions include paints and coatings documented to support LEED and BREEAM certification. Product types listed include decorative architectural paints, powder coatings, intumescent coatings for cellulosic fire protection, protective and anti-carbonation coatings, and floor coatings. The article says the products have documented low VOC emissions compared with conventional products.
- Some exterior products reflect more heat than conventional coatings, lowering indoor and surface temperatures, urban heat and building cooling demand. Jotun also provides an online Green Building Guide to find products that contribute to LEED/BREEAM points and guide specifications for different corrosivity environments under ISO 12944. The company offers more than 100 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
- The article notes that paints and coatings represent about 2% of building costs but can contribute up to 27% of points needed for LEED v4 certification. It says Jotun products can help earn up to 11 points in Indoor Environmental Quality, Sustainable Sites, and Materials and Resources. Certified green buildings are described as potentially having lower operating and maintenance costs, higher occupancy and rents, stronger resale values, and health/wellbeing advantages.
- Market information in the article includes more than 99,000 LEED projects in 165 countries and territories and an estimate that the green-building market doubled every three years. It also cites 2018 survey expectations that a majority of projects would be green by 2021; these are dated projections. SDGs 3, 9, 11 and 12 shown.
