  • Kaldnes® provides customized and patented standard recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for land-based grow-out facilities for salmon, trout, kingfish and other fish. Particle filtration and custom biofilters purify water, recover nutrients and remove waste; the company says farms can reuse 99.7% of tank water.
  • A full installation may include fresh- and seawater intake purification, pH control and water-polishing loops, lighting and feeding controls, dead-fish processing, sludge treatment, temperature management, video surveillance, electric automation and a control room, plus plant maintenance systems.
  • The article presents land-based farms as a way to reduce coastal aquaculture issues such as antibiotic discharge, seabed accumulation of feed and feces, fish escapes, sea lice, and disease transmission to wild fish. It also cites transport cost and emissions from coastal farms located away from population centers. Filtration, oxygen use, CO₂ and nitrogen removal are described as beneficial to fish welfare; compact and energy-efficient equipment, low operating costs, limited maintenance, and remote customer support are also cited.
  • The page states that Kaldnes RAS systems had been implemented worldwide and were a market-leading solution for Norwegian smolt and post-smolt plants. Krüger Kaldnes is described as Veolia Water Technologies’ Norwegian business unit; in 2019 it joined with Krüger in Denmark to form Veolia Water Technology Aquaculture, intended as Veolia’s global aquaculture center of expertise. It cites 2016 global salmon production value of USD 15.4 billion. SDGs 2, 9, 12 and 14 shown.
