  • Published October 6, 2022; updated September 30, 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Status: available. Categories: Offshore wind / Operation and maintenance; Energy.
  • Kongsberg Ferrotech’s Oktapous, Nautilus and Exoskeleton robots perform subsea inspection, maintenance and repair in place, at depths down to 1,500 meters. They can use visual inspection and non-destructive testing, with inspection data saved to a digital-twin tool. Maintenance tasks are intended to find defects and avoid shutdowns; repairs in a digitally controlled environment can use corrosion protection and additive manufacturing to restore structural integrity.
  • The company says its approach brings the repair workshop to the damaged asset, avoiding the need to retrieve it. The article describes marine growth, coating damage, fatigue and corrosion as problems for offshore wind structures, cables and pipelines. Conventional underwater inspection/repair can be costly, slow and dangerous.
  • Claimed advantages include 30–70% lower costs, half the intervention time, less downtime and lost revenue, reduced vessel/manufacturing/transport emissions, and improved worker safety. The page says work can be conducted without ROVs, divers or other vessel-supported equipment, while relevant staff can watch or participate remotely from their workspace or phone.
  • It cites more than 6,000 offshore wind turbines and forecasts a tenfold increase in global capacity between 2021 and 2035. Founded in 2014, Kongsberg Ferrotech was developing Nautilus with Equinor, SINTEF and Gassco as partners, adding advanced 3D printing for in-situ metal-to-metal repairs.
