  • Kongsberg Maritime describes a 2,000-TEU LNG-powered container feeder designed to transition to cleaner fuels as they become available, including biofuels, synthetic LNG and green ammonia. Its open-top design and larger hull allow more tank space for future fuels and require less cargo-hold ventilation. A hybrid shaft generator provides power takeoff and can reduce reliance on auxiliary engines; customers may also add wind and battery power.
  • The article says the design could reduce emissions by 36% compared with conventional marine-gas-oil-fueled vessels when combining LNG, power takeoff and wind technologies, and potentially achieve an 85% reduction after transition to the cleanest fuel alternatives. It claims the concept could preserve an IMO carbon-intensity A rating for at least 10 years, reduce operating costs by 37%, and repay increased capital costs in two to five years.
  • It describes uncertainty about future fuels and regulation as a challenge for shipowners buying vessels intended to operate for decades. The design aims to remain adaptable as lower-carbon fuels and standards evolve. Kongsberg Maritime is described as operating manufacturing, sales and service facilities in 34 countries. The article cites a then-current IMO goal of halving shipping greenhouse emissions by 2050 and anticipated stricter rules; those are historical references. SDG 9 shown.
