MacGregor provides complete mooring systems for floating offshore wind farms
- Published June 30, 2022; updated September 30, 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Categories: Offshore wind / Balance of plant; Energy.
- MacGregor adapts its offshore mooring expertise for floating wind turbines. The complete system includes tensioners, winches, chain stoppers and subsea connectors for different depths and seabed conditions. Disconnectable mooring lines allow a floating platform to be towed to shore for quayside maintenance.
- The article presents stronger and more stable offshore winds and reduced foundation requirements as potential advantages of floating wind. It says a 3 mph increase in wind speed can double turbine energy output, citing the American Geosciences Institute. It also notes that mooring remains a major technical challenge requiring innovation and adaptation of existing offshore technology.
- MacGregor says its mooring solutions have been delivered for floating installations in harsh environments, including the North Sea and hurricane-prone Gulf of Mexico. It supplied mooring systems for Hywind Scotland, described as the world’s first floating wind farm, operational since 2017 and powering about 20,000 UK homes at the time of publication.
- The page includes a historical market forecast that offshore wind would grow from an estimated USD 27 billion in 2017 to around USD 55 billion by 2022. SDG 7 shown.
