Magnetic Miko Plaster hull repair patch prevents oil leaks
- Published March 22, 2023; updated March 23, 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Category: Maritime / Ship design and ship’s equipment.
- The patented Magnetic Miko Plaster® is a reusable magnetic tarpaulin qualified by DNV GL to seal hull breaches, sea chests and water inlets or outlets below the waterline while a vessel is afloat. Divers install it. The article says standard underwater repairs such as welding or wooden plugs can take time while divers are mobilised, increasing the risk of oil or other hazardous liquids leaking from a damaged vessel.
- The patch comprises reinforced PVC matting and nitrile-rubber sheeting. Magnetic adhesion attaches it to steel; water pressure helps maintain the seal. Larger sizes include a buoyancy sheet to aid underwater handling. The page says extended storage does not demagnetise the tarpaulin. Standard sizes can be sent urgently with installation tools; the patch can be customised for steel vessels and also used on offshore drilling-unit containment tanks.
- The article says the Norway-produced product provides a cost-effective way to keep water out and hazardous liquids in, and can shorten response time. It cites thousands of oil spills annually, most under one barrel, while larger spills may reach 200,000 metric tons; it says 50–75% of major spills result from collisions, groundings or hull failures.
- Miko Marine was established in 1997 and supplies marine safety, salvage and recovery systems, including underwater oil removal, underwater magnets, sea-chest covers and emergency hull-repair kits. SDG 14 shown.
