Miko Polar Kit for hull repair prevents polar shipwrecks
- Published March 22, 2023; updated September 21, 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Category: Maritime / Ship design and ship’s equipment.
- The Miko Polar Kit is a shipboard emergency hull-repair package intended to seal punctures quickly and prevent a damaged vessel from sinking or releasing oil and other hazardous liquids into sensitive polar ecosystems. It includes DNV GL-qualified magnetic patches, including the patented Miko Plaster®, and the complete installation equipment. Crews are trained in advance to use it. The patch can be applied without divers or an ROV down to 2 metres below the waterline, and the kit can also seal offshore drilling-unit containment tanks.
- The article says collisions with ice commonly puncture hulls near or below the waterline, where immediate repair while the ship remains buoyant is important. Ships do not normally carry divers for underwater repairs. It says the kit helps demonstrate emergency preparedness required for IMO Polar Code certification; the IMO introduced the Polar Code in 2017 to improve vessel safety and prevent pollution.
- The page cites rising ship traffic and expedition tourism in the Arctic and Antarctic as raising the risk of damage. It says the kit is carried on several cruise ships and may become standard equipment for vessels in icy waters; it can be used on other vessel types too.
- Miko Marine, established in 1997, supplies marine safety, salvage and recovery systems, including underwater oil removal, underwater magnets, sea-chest covers and magnetic hull patches. SDG 14 shown.
