Miros real-time ocean monitoring for offshore wind
- Published June 5, 2024; updated September 30, 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Available in Europe. Categories: Offshore wind / Installation and Operation and maintenance; Maritime / Operations, management and digital solutions; Energy.
- Miros provides real-time and historical sea-state data using sensors that monitor wind, waves and currents. The data is intended to help wind-farm and vessel operators make operational decisions and assess long-term structural condition, maintenance needs and failure risks. The page says Miros uses cybersecurity measures for data collection and storage.
- The article describes a cable-laying contractor that planned 12 inter-array cables for a floating wind farm but completed only four because of inadequate weather data. It says better sea-state information might have helped choose a different vessel, prevent costly delay and save three times the emissions. A second example says a service vessel continued work when Miros measured waves at 3.9 metres, below a 4-metre stop-work threshold, despite a general forecast of 4.2 metres; it says this avoided six hours of downtime.
- Miros sells “sea state-as-a-service”: a subscription including dry-mounted IoT sensors and cloud access. The article says Miros owns, insures and maintains the equipment, offering plug-and-play use without upfront costs. The model is intended to keep technology functioning and updated over a wind farm’s estimated 25-year life.
- The page cites a forecast that over 380 GW of offshore wind capacity would be added across 32 markets in the following 10 years. Miros focuses on Europe, especially the UK, and says demand for offshore wind service vessels exceeds capacity. It describes over four decades of experience with radar-based ocean-surface measurements for offshore and maritime industries. SDG 7 shown.
