  • NOFI’s Current Buster is an oil-spill recovery system designed to lower response time and cost while improving collection efficiency. Towing and wave energy corral floating oil into a thicker layer, which is directed into an integrated settling tank while cleaned water is continuously discharged. Available in four sizes, it can collect different oil types at speeds up to 5 knots, including scattered slicks. The page says the system has been tested and qualified in varied weather, waves, wind and currents.
  • The article says oil-spill response requires expensive standby vessels, people and equipment, while spills can originate from platforms, wrecked tankers, collisions, pipelines, rail or road. Oil spreads rapidly as a thin surface film and can move far from its source before responders arrive. The Current Buster is claimed to increase capacity per response vessel, reducing required permanent response capacity, fuel use and related carbon emissions.
  • It is qualified for year-round operation in the Barents Sea and is described as suited to remote Arctic operations, open ocean, harbours, lakes and current-exposed inland rivers. The page cites a global oil-spill-management market valuation of about USD 151 billion in 2024, forecast to reach USD 183 billion by 2030, partly due to expanding Arctic shipping and environmental risks. SDGs 9 and 14 shown.
