Nordavind DC Sites offers shovel-ready sites for carbon-neutral data centres
- Published November 8, 2022; updated August 21, 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Category: Digital infrastructure / Access to land and power.
- Nordavind DC Sites offers pre-prepared sites in Innlandet County, between Oslo and Trondheim, for medium-sized and hyperscale data centres. The company is a joint venture of local municipalities, power companies, grid operators and fibre-network operators, intended to ensure the necessary infrastructure. Twelve sites were available; most have flat sand-and-gravel terraces that may lower construction cost, and the region is described as less exposed to extreme weather, flooding, landslides and similar hazards.
- The article says Norway’s power supply is nearly 100% renewable and electricity prices are among Europe’s lowest. A cold climate supports efficient cooling. Nordavind offers dark fibre to Stockholm and Oslo and was preparing a subsea cable between Trondheim and the landing station at Killala Bay, Ireland, to create a redundant, low-latency connection to the US. Some sites could reuse data-centre excess heat for nearby industry and homes.
- The page says data centres consumed 1–3% of global electricity and their emissions were roughly comparable to the airline industry. It cites growth from 500,000 data centres worldwide in 2012 to over 8 million in 2019 and forecasts global data-centre energy demand doubling every four years, with AI, IoT and big-data analytics increasing computing demand. It presents green-power data centres as increasingly sought after by governments, shareholders and customers. SDGs 9 and 12 shown.
