Norwegian Electric Systems enables electric, zero-emission car ferries

- Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) supplies integrated power and control systems for electric short-route car ferries. The page describes maritime transport as emitting about 940 million metric tonnes of CO₂ annually and accounting for roughly 2.5% of global greenhouse-gas emissions; it cites an IMO goal to cut global shipping emissions by 50% by 2050. It notes that coastal and island communities may depend on ferries and that battery capacity, energy storage and onshore charging are challenges for electrification.
- NES components named: QuadroMaster® DC switchboard and Odin’s Eye® DC grid solution for battery use; Raven INS® integrated navigation for bridge operations and semi-autonomous crossings; Raven® integrated operator chair; and integrated automation with automatic charging. Onshore battery boost banks supply charging power where high-capacity grid connections are limited. NES says systems are optimized and integrated for each vessel type.
- NES operates as a system integrator, coordinating shipboard systems from bridge to propeller and also offering onshore charging facilities. The page says installation can let electric ferries eliminate greenhouse-gas emissions; it also identifies reductions in SO₂, NOₓ and particulate emissions as benefits of replacing fossil-fuel ferries.
- Norwegian public passenger-ferry tenders weigh energy efficiency and emissions. The page says NES systems can serve ferries with route lengths up to 35 minutes. At the time described, the company had delivered systems to eight ferries and had nine more on order, including electrification of MF Norangsfjord and a charging station at Hollingsholmen quay.
- NES is stated to have over 35 years in electric marine systems and to have developed 4,000 small and large electric systems across vessel types. No total market sizing is provided.
- Linked to SDG 9, Industry, innovation and infrastructure, because electrifying passenger ferries can reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions.
