NUAS Technology extracts oil and protein from residual raw material from fish
- Published 15 December 2022; updated 21 September 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Listed as available under Aquaculture and fisheries, Circular economy, and Agritech and food production.
- NUAS Technology describes a patented, modular hydrolysis system that extracts oil, protein and bone from whole unsaleable fish and fish-processing residuals. Ingredients can be sold for animal feed, human food and nutritional supplements. The process is intended to use the whole fish, reduce waste and create additional revenue for producers.
- The page says Norway generated 964,000 metric tonnes of seafood residual material in 2019; over 84% was utilized, but only 15% went to human consumption. Globally it cites 35% of fish harvest as lost or wasted, including material dumped at sea or sent to municipal waste, with environmental and landfill impacts.
- Freshness is a core design focus: residuals are gently stirred without mechanical parts to limit oxidation, and the process avoids acids that could reduce ingredient purity. The page says the plant meets requirements for products intended for human consumption.
- The container-mounted plant is movable and can be installed at seafood processing sites. The stated capacity is 2 metric tonnes per hour in under 100 m²; the page compares a traditional hydrolysis plant as potentially five times larger. The system is described as scalable for different company sizes and plant types.
- On-site processing can avoid transport costs, fuel use and associated emissions while preserving ingredient freshness.
- Market context on the page: global food demand was forecast to rise 59–98% by 2050; global fish-product volume was stated as nearly 178 million tonnes in 2018 and forecast to exceed 228 million tonnes by 2027. These are dated estimates/projections. The page also says pilot-plant completion/testing was expected in autumn 2020 and market readiness in early 2021; this is historical text and does not confirm current operating status.
- Linked to SDG 2, Zero hunger; SDG 9, Industry, innovation and infrastructure; and SDG 12, Responsible consumption and production, through food production, resource efficiency and reduced fish-chain waste.
