- Published 12 June 2025; updated 23 March 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Listed as available worldwide under Fashion (Manufacturing and design).
- Oleana makes knitwear and blankets from natural fibres at its factory in Ytre Arna on Norway’s western coast. Founded in 1992 in response to textile production moving offshore and declining Norwegian craft skills, the company presents local, ethical manufacturing as an alternative to fast fashion.
- Production is carried out at the company’s own factory, from knitting through linking, sewing and packaging. Materials named are merino wool, silk and linen; the article says these durable natural fibres avoid microplastics. Garments include cardigans, dresses, skirts, trousers, coats and blazers; home goods include throw pillows and blankets. Oleana launches two collections each year.
- The company says local manufacturing gives control over quality, fair wages and safe working conditions. It says making fewer, longer-lasting products reduces overproduction and textile waste, while maintaining Norwegian textile craft traditions. Natural fibres are presented as reducing microplastic pollution and supporting more responsible resource use.
- Challenge context includes textile-sector emissions, dye-related water pollution, microplastics, resource use and unsafe/low-wage work. The page also says fast fashion contributes to loss of craft traditions.
- Market figures cited: global sustainable fashion market valued at USD 12.46 billion in 2025 and forecast to reach USD 53.37 billion by 2032, a stated 23.1% CAGR. Oleana exports about 40% of products; markets include Australia, Benelux, Canada, Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland, with Japan growing.
- Linked to SDG 6, Clean water and sanitation, and SDG 12, Responsible consumption and production, for reducing water pollution, resource use, overproduction and waste.
