OSO Energy unlocks the power of water heaters
- Published 7 November 2022; updated 30 September 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Availability label says “Soon available” and notes ongoing B2B pilots; it also says a B2C version “will be launched in 2022.” Categories: Battery (integration) and Energy.
- OSO Charge turns cloud-connected domestic water heaters into thermal batteries that utilities can coordinate to reduce peak demand and balance renewable power. The page says this can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel generation used during high-demand periods.
- The system comprises a connected water heater, consumer mobile app and APIs to integrate with grid-control systems. Microsoft Azure Sphere is described as providing end-to-end secure connectivity. Utilities can manage heaters as distributed energy resources, gain redundancy, share benefits with customers and use digital-twin simulations for capacity planning to avoid unnecessary grid investment.
- Consumers’ heaters can respond to price signals, heating water when electricity is abundant and less expensive, without requiring changes to shower/household routines. The app also allows settings such as sleep mode while residents are on holiday.
- The article frames the need around variable solar and wind generation, electrification and EV uptake increasing grid load and the need for flexible peak-management capacity.
- Market context: OSO says Norway alone had 250,000 installed heaters that could be retrofitted. It initially targeted B2B pilots in Norway and Canada and named the Nordics, UK and Canada as target markets. The page’s current “Soon available” label sits alongside historical B2C launch plans for spring/2022; the page does not clarify current rollout status.
- OSO Energy is part of OSO Hotwater Group, described as a leading European stainless-steel water-heater manufacturer.
