Pascal Technologies’ AirHull boosts energy efficiency in boats
- Published 4 February 2025; updated 23 March 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Listed as available in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania under Maritime / Ship design and ship’s equipment.
- AirHull is Pascal Technologies’ proprietary air-based hull design for planing boats, fast workboats and ferries. The vessel has a cavity under the hull; a fan pushes air into it as the boat gains speed, lifting part of the hull and reducing water resistance. An automatic controller manages fan operation and pressure. The technology is designed to work across vessel sizes and energy sources, including electric propulsion.
- The page says conventional workboats and ferries contribute to air pollution and climate emissions, and that the limited range of electric boats can hinder adoption. It cites shipping at about 2% of global CO₂ emissions (roughly 1 billion tonnes per year).
- Pascal claims AirHull can improve energy efficiency by up to 50%, and says it can double an electric boat’s range at high or cruising speeds compared with a conventional electric boat. These are company-stated performance claims. The system can be used with electric or fossil-fuel propulsion.
- The company says it works with boat builders from design through delivery, and is involved in leisure craft, crew-transfer vessels and workboats. The stated suitable length range is 6–30 metres.
- Market context on the page forecasts the global electric-boat market growing from USD 8.22 billion in 2025 to USD 22.31 billion by 2033; this is a cited external forecast. It notes range as a key adoption barrier. In 2024, Pascal and other firms signed a letter of intent to develop a fully electric high-speed harbour craft for Singapore.
- Linked to SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) for improved workboat/ferry energy efficiency and lower CO₂ emissions. Pascal also sells ALS controls for larger LNG, bulk, container and cruise vessels.
