  • Published 22 November 2022; updated 21 September 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Listed under Aquaculture and fisheries.
  • Plany Lumpfish Kelp is a set of panels made from abrasion-resistant, food-grade textile, hung inside salmon net pens to give lumpfish a thick surface to attach to and rest on. Two panels are typically placed parallel to form a corridor for salmon. Lumpfish are cleaner fish that eat sea lice from salmon, but need their own suitable resting habitat, especially in strong currents.
  • The page says sea lice cause about USD 1 billion in annual damage and that traditional treatments face parasite resistance. It also cites an estimate that 50 million cleaner fish die each year at Norwegian farms. The product is presented as supporting cleaner-fish welfare and reducing delousing treatments, which may reduce stress, deaths, costs and environmental impact. A salmon-farm site manager says many lumpfish use the shelters and that the product helps reduce treatment frequency.
  • The material is described as free from toxic-compound and microplastic contamination risks, recyclable, durable and easy to clean. Plany says it wants to produce the product in each sales market to support local economies and reduce shipping emissions and costs.
  • The article cites an aquaculture-products market projection of USD 53 billion by 2026, now a dated projection. The product was reported in use in Norway, with expansion plans for Canada and other aquaculture markets.
  • Linked to SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) for cleaner-fish welfare and potentially fewer delousing treatments.
