PortBin TrashTrawl for easy river waste collection
- Published 21 March 2023; updated 26 June 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Listed as available globally under Maritime and Smart cities.
- PortBin TrashTrawl is a modular river-waste interceptor based on oil-spill response equipment. Floating booms guide debris into a collection net, where the river current moves waste into the system without external power. It can be adapted to different river widths and conditions, is described as compatible with boat traffic, and can be installed with minimal infrastructure. Collected material is removed daily or weekly depending on local conditions.
- The article says rivers carry waste from stormwater, public spaces and infrastructure into the sea, where collection becomes harder and more costly. It identifies regulation, public concern and ESG reporting as drivers for visible, measurable interception.
- Benefits stated include capturing plastic before it reaches the ocean, protecting river and coastal wildlife, low operating/maintenance costs, improved public spaces and environmental reporting. It complements PortBin Tide for ports and ShoreCleaner for land cleanup. SpillTech is described as expanding in Europe, North America and Asia.
- Linked to SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and SDG 14 (Life below water) for intercepting river debris before it reaches coastal waters and oceans.
