PSW Power & Automation innovates onshore power supply solutions for cleaner ports
- Published 10 March 2025; updated 16 April 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Listed globally under Maritime / Operations, management and digital solutions, Battery / Integration, and Energy / Power supply.
- PSW provides integrated shore-power systems that transfer electricity from the grid to ships in ports and offshore facilities. The product range includes medium-voltage systems for cruise and container ports designed to IEC 8005-1, and low-voltage systems to IEC 8005-3. Typical components include switchgear, transformers, active-front-end and grid inverters, and upgrades to port and local-grid infrastructure.
- The systems support vessel-to-grid power flow, megawatt charging of onboard batteries with charge rates adapted to grid capacity, available time and electricity prices, and integration with energy storage, renewables and grid-stabilisation services.
- Without shore power, vessels generally run diesel generators while docked, causing emissions and noise. The page cites the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation requirement that European ports provide shore-side electricity by 2030. It says cruise and offshore vessels use available shore-power connections more than ports expected, motivated by emissions reductions, reduced onboard noise and maintenance, and fewer crew members needed on watch.
- PSW says it exports worldwide. The page describes rising demand driven by regulation and says more countries may adopt rules similar to Norway’s limits on auxiliary-engine use while docked.
- Linked to SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) for reducing emissions and noise at berth.
