Quantafuel chemical recycling turns plastic waste into a raw material
- Published 14 December 2022; updated 23 March 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Listed under Circular economy.
- Quantafuel’s proprietary catalytic chemical-recycling process converts mixed plastic waste into a liquid feedstock for new plastics and chemicals. The article presents this as complementing mechanical recycling and enabling mixed or soiled waste, which is unsuitable for conventional mechanical recycling, to become feedstock for food-grade plastic. It says the process produces a liquid free of impurities.
- The page cites estimates that only 14% of plastics are recycled globally, while 40% goes to landfill, 14% to incineration and 32% to unmanaged dumps. It notes limits on plastic-waste exports as a reason European countries need domestic waste treatment.
- Claimed benefits include diverting waste from landfills and incineration, lowering associated pollution and energy consumption, increasing the share of recyclable mixed waste and replacing virgin oil and gas in petrochemical production. The article says Quantafuel could process about 35% of Denmark’s annual plastic waste.
- The page says Quantafuel opened a plastic-to-liquid plant in Skive, Denmark, in September 2020, planned to process more than 20,000 tonnes of mixed Danish/Norwegian waste and make about 16,000 tonnes of feedstock for BASF in Germany. It also states a goal to build plants with combined annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes. These are historical plant descriptions and plans from the article; they do not establish current operating status.
- Market/regulatory context cites an older forecast of a USD 72.6 billion recycled-plastics market by 2026 and an EU target of 50% plastic-packaging recycling by 2025. Both dates have elapsed, so these are historical projections/targets as presented in the article.
