Respo Circular Terrazzo turns construction waste into beautiful flooring
- Published 8 December 2023; updated 17 August 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Listed under Architecture and construction and Circular economy.
- Respo Circular Terrazzo is custom mosaic flooring made onsite from discarded construction materials such as ceramic tile, marble, granite and window/partition glass. The material is mixed and formed into flooring and can also be used on stairs, walls and furniture. Customers review samples and choose shapes, colours and binders.
- Ellingard’s service covers project design, material mapping, production, installation, preparation of project-specific Environmental Product Declarations and after-market support. In most cases the flooring is manufactured and installed at the project site, avoiding factory production, mining and transport of heavy materials to site and landfill.
- The company estimates its reuse-based process cuts CO₂ emissions by 70–80% compared with making terrazzo from new material. It says the flooring may last up to 200 years. These are company claims in the article.
- The page frames construction as a high-growth, high-waste industry where circular material use can improve project returns and help meet carbon targets. Ellingard is described as having customers in Norway and Sweden and a project in Portugal. Respo Circular Terrazzo was a finalist for Norway’s Construction Industry Innovation Award in 2023.
- Linked to SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) for lower-impact construction and reuse of discarded building material.
