ScanReach maritime IoT platform saves lives on board
- Published 10 March 2023; updated 21 September 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Listed under Maritime / Operations, management and digital solutions, and Technology.
- ScanReach’s Onboard Wireless Connectivity (OWC) is a cable-free mesh of wireless nodes designed to connect people, environmental sensors and equipment inside steel vessels and other complex installations. The article says it can be fitted to vessels, rigs and wind farms, with crew able to install the plug-and-play system in a few hours.
- Its ConnectPOB function provides an approximate real-time count and location of personnel on board, including during safety drills and emergencies. The page says this can cut search-and-rescue location time from hours to minutes. It also describes collecting operating data such as fuel use, engine and compressor status, and gas leaks, helping operators respond to faults and reduce resource use and costs.
- The stated problem is that maritime workers often perform hazardous tasks alone across large, noisy ships and may be difficult to locate. Cable installation also makes onboard connectivity and data collection cumbersome, slowing digital upgrades.
- Market section forecasts that 50% of maritime actors would have installed an IoT solution within five years; the article does not identify a base date for that forecast, so it should be treated as an attributed projection rather than current adoption data. ConnectPOB was reported as already operating on numerous vessels worldwide.
- A separate customized product, POB Connect Wind, is linked for offshore-wind use. The article links the platform to SDGs 8 (Decent work and economic growth) and 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure).
