SmartKalk LCA simplifies carbon emission calculations in construction
- Published 30 November 2023; updated 17 August 2026; estimated reading time 3 minutes. Listed under Architecture and construction.
- Holte’s SmartKalk LCA is an add-on to its construction-estimating software. It calculates building-project carbon footprints and presents environmental impact alongside cost estimates. It draws Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) data from sources including Norway’s NOBB, the ECO Portal and ÖKOBAUDAT, so builders can report and compare products’ life-cycle impacts.
- The company says the tool is designed for construction businesses, including smaller firms that lack specialist knowledge or resources for complex carbon calculations. Its “environmental data” function is described as producing an LCA/report quickly. If a selected product lacks an EPD, the software suggests similar products that have one; Holte says this feature is unique in Norway. A simple machine-learning mechanism is intended to improve alternatives as usage grows.
- The page says companies can make purchasing decisions using both price and environmental data, and claims users may save up to 90% versus hiring an external consultant for carbon calculations. This is a company estimate. The article links stricter environmental requirements in the EU and Norway’s requirement for commercial-building carbon reporting as market drivers.
- Holte is established in Norway and has customers in Denmark; Finland and Sweden are identified as potential export markets. SmartKalk LCA was a finalist for the Norwegian Construction Industry’s Innovation Award 2023.
- Linked to SDGs 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities).
