Tempia provides eco-friendly cooling system for smaller fishing boats
- Published 22 March 2023; updated 24 September 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Marked available; listed under Aquaculture and fisheries and Maritime / Ship design and ship’s equipment.
- Tempia’s CO₂PRO refrigerated-seawater (RSW) system uses carbon dioxide refrigerant and is designed for fishing vessels down to 10 metres. The page contrasts it with ice/slurry ice, which can limit time at sea, and with Freon- or ammonia-based systems, which it describes as environmentally harmful or hazardous and potentially too large or costly for smaller vessels.
- The system includes a seawater-cooled gas cooler, controls, compressor, receiver, valves and filter. Tempia says its refrigerant-injection approach can cool seawater to 1°C without evaporator freeze. It is touch-screen operated and can be remotely controlled online. Components can pass through a 600 × 600 mm hatch, allowing vessel-specific installation without major rebuilding, according to the company.
- Tempia says the RSW system can let boats remain at sea longer, fish to capacity and save time and fuel, with lower maintenance demands than alternatives. The article reports installations on six Norwegian vessels and says four additional systems were confirmed for delivery in Norway in 2020; those dated numbers do not establish the current installed base.
- The page cites over 2.5 million motorised fishing boats under 12 metres worldwide from an FAO source and identifies international expansion as a goal.
- Linked to SDGs 2 (Zero hunger), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 12 (Responsible consumption and production).
