Thermtech dries and separates waste for upcycling
- Published 14 December 2022; updated 21 September 2026; estimated reading time 2 minutes. Marked available; listed under Aquaculture and fisheries, Circular economy, and Agritech and food production.
- Thermtech’s Thermo Mechanical Dryer (TMD) uses friction to transfer heat directly into mixed solid/liquid waste, separating solids from condensate. The company says it is suited to sticky or glue-like materials that are difficult to dry with indirect dryers. The patented process is described as gently recovering solids and condensate with little or no bacteria or mould; a fluidised bed gives the unit a relatively small footprint.
- Potential inputs listed include biowaste, municipal waste, fish offal and sludge, manure, proteins and blood, plus petroleum sludge, plastics and rubber. Thermtech says dried solids or recovered liquids—such as oils—can be reused; fish sludge from land-based aquaculture is reportedly processed for fertiliser. The company says the electrically powered system can reduce landfill, waste transport and associated emissions while creating value from residues.
- The article says Thermtech first developed TMD for oil and gas and was looking to expand into agriculture, food processing, plastics and rubber recycling. It offers customer-specific waste analysis and solution design. All performance and upcycling outcomes are described by the company; no measured energy, recovery or emissions results are provided.
